At present, I only have one collection of short stories but my intention is to produce another this year. When I do, it will be no more than six stories, like my first anthology.
Short stories are, I’ve already learned, a different challenge, or ‘discipline’ as it might be called.
I’ll work through a few ideas I’ve built up from discarded dialogue and scenes. My mentor continues to offer me snippets of useful information but apart from having more than one book ready at the outset, an important tip was:
‘Never scrap anything you’ve written. If it doesn’t work in the story it was intended for, it might come in useful to build another story around.’
